On Tuesday Brandon and I went to the Wadi Degla, a dry riverbed near Maadi. It was a great place to hike, look at fossils, and fear wild dogs. Here are some photos:
Fortunately we didn’t meet any dogs in the park. However we did meet some on the long walk to find a taxi in the middle of nowhere after we left the park. There is really nothing quite like a long walk in the middle of nowhere looking for nonexistent taxis surrounded by wild dogs. Nothing like it.
Isn’t it beautiful? Normally it is loud and crowded, so it was really nice to enjoy some peace and quiet in a desolate wasteland. And I am saying “desolate wasteland” with incredible fondness. Seriously.
We kept an eye out for fossils since this used to be covered in water millions of years ago.
Possible fossil?
Totally fossils.
These snail shells were absolutely everywhere. Sometimes embedded in rock… sometimes just scattered around on the surface.
Hiking around was a lot of fun, but if you stood still for too long…
Yeah. Just keeping it real for you guys. I hate flies. But I still had a great time.
Beautiful landscape! Thanks for sharing some sunny, warm photos. We could use a little sunshine in the NW!
You bet! I’ll trade some sunshine for beautiful cloudy skies and rain.
I like the upclose photo of the riverbed with the city in the background.
Interesting.
Thanks, Lisa! It is pretty amazing how close this desolate place is to the city, but it was nice to get as far away as we did! :)
